Capturing Joshua Tree: A Road-Test with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3
Over Thanksgiving on a recent trip, I went to Joshua Tree National Park. I figured this would be a perfect time to test out my new DJI Osmo Pocket 3! Compact and capable, I wanted to see how this little powerhouse would hold up on a car-mounted adventure through some of the most scenic stretches of Southern California.
Putting the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 to the Test
I decided to get creative with my setup, using a Delkin suction cup mount system to attach the Osmo Pocket 3 to my car in three strategic positions: the hood, rear glass, and inside the cab. To add an extra layer of security, I integrated safety chains into the rig.
This setup allowed me to capture footage that was both smooth and stunning, even at speeds of 40–50 mph. Whether it was the wide-open desert landscapes or close-ups of the car in motion, the Osmo Pocket 3 handled everything with ease.
Highlights from the Shoot
1. Joshua Tree from Unique Angles
From sweeping desert vistas to the interplay of light and shadow as I drove under Joshua Tree’s iconic flora, the footage came out beautifully cinematic. The camera’s stabilization and compact design made it ideal for dynamic, hard-to-reach shots.
2. DIY Mounting Setup
I walked viewers through my dual-suction-cup system, explaining how the safety chains and hood T-bars provided peace of mind. This setup worked like a charm, proving you don’t need heavy-duty rigs for professional-grade results.
3. Insights for Filmmakers and Creators
While Joshua Tree was the perfect backdrop for this test, the Osmo Pocket 3’s performance opens doors for creative possibilities in corporate and commercial projects. Its lightweight design and powerful features make it an excellent addition to any filmmaker’s toolkit.
